Ramstein Training Event Update

by on Jun.12, 2013, under HACKINT Training, News

Hey all,

Just wanted to give an update that I’m still plugging away developing courses and hands on challenges for the upcoming training event at Ramstein.  Today the 30 individuals taking the training from squadrons across the base and neighboring bases have been identified.  Emails will go out soon to those individuals and I’ll continue developing out the courses.  It is of interest to me that much of what I like developing, teaching, training, etc. is completely freely available.  For example, I’m developing one of the Intelligence courses right now and leaning heavily on the Joint Publication documents from the US Govt including JP 2-0 which discusses the Intelligence life cycle and various types of Intel.  Intelligence does not seem to be instantly relevant to defense and forensics but it is often the case that good forensic cases and good defensive measures are based off of threat intelligence and other forms of intelligence applied to these domains.  I’d encourage everyone who is interested in learning more in their field to keep an open mind and look for opportunities to learn and develop their skills in a variety of ways.

I’m also moving forward with getting the hackINT website and class videos up and going, I’m expecting late July or early August depending on other commitments; it’ll be my focus after the Ramstein training event.

I’m looking forward to the June/July training event and I’ll have a lot more to post after it.

Thanks!

Ramstein Training Event – Focus for the Next Few Months

by on Apr.25, 2013, under HACKINT Competition, HACKINT Training, News

I presented an idea to some of the members of AFCEA Chapter 158 at Ramstein AB, Germany and got a positive response so I want to share what’s going on with hackINT right now.  Every year there is a Summer Tech Expo at Ramstein Air Base that shows off the latest in military communications technology to the base and raises money through vendor fees that goes entirely towards free education scholarships for military members and their families in the region. Last year I hosted hackINT Con 2012 there with a capture the flag contest.  This year, I wanted to step it up some and get more training out there to people.  So what hackINT will be doing in partnership with AFCEA Chapter 158 is hosting a four day training session followed by a competition.

How it’ll work: Numerous Commanders of Communications Squadrons around Ramstein Air Base are going to send 4 students who are interested to 4 days of training.  The training will take place June 29/30 and July 13/14. Commanders are going to give the members day passes so that they can still get time off at a later date for giving up their Saturday and Sunday. The training will be a holistic approach of teaching all four core disciplines at hackINT: Forensics, Intelligence, Hacking, and Defense. I’m currently developing a few extra classes so I can teach all four disciplines and will debut them at this training event. Students will take a skills measuring test before and after the training so that some sort of metric can be obtained on how they performed and how they felt their skills developed.  At the end of the training, at the Summer Tech Expo, there will be a competition where students will have to use all four disciplines to gain points and win.  The teams will be made up of the Squadrons’ members that attended the training.

This is going to be a huge event and so far has a number of Squadrons already participating. So to not take away from the event and to give it my full focus I will be putting all my time in hackINT towards this event.  Post this event there will be more classes offered to the public including those debuted at the training event.

Thanks!

Robert

Next Class and AFCEA West

by on Jan.26, 2013, under HACKINT Training, News

Hello all,

The next class being taught will be done at Ramstein AB (ADPE building as usual) from 0900-1600 and it will be the Intrusion Detection Systems class.  This class is meant for anyone familiar with computers that is not familiar with Intrusion Detection Systems including the opensource and free software – Snort.  The class will cover the basics of an IDS, definitions, different types, and signature rule creation.  Students will have an opportunity to create their own rules in a Virtual Machine to test out against Packet Captures from Wireshark.

In addition, I’ll be flying from Germany tomorrow to San Diego, California to attend AFCEA West.  hackINT has been given a few minutes to give a presentation on what the organization is and what its future goals are.  If you are visiting this website after having seen my presentation on hackINT thanks for stopping in.  This website is meant to only be a temporary website and I and a few friends are currently working on the official hackINT site which will launch later this year.  The launch of the official site will have a much more professional layout, more information about hackINT, and online recorded classes available to students.

If you have any questions about hackINT or are in the Ramstein area and want to sign up for the Feb 16th class please email me at RobertMichael.Lee (..at..) Gmail.com

The goals for hackINT in this next year will be to:

– Develop 3-6 additional classes

– Launch the official website with 3-4 recorded classes available at launch

– Create the “hackINT” position on the Young AFCEAN council for Chapter 158

– Spread hackINT to another Air Force base (likely one in PACAF following a certain Major who will be moving there from Chapter 158)

Thanks,

Robert

Updates, Classes, and Moving Forward

by on Oct.30, 2012, under News

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted, luckily Eric has been posting for me some about classes he’s been teaching at Ramstein AB.  I’ve had a lot on my plate lately with moving, grad classes, and the like but again I want to throw some kudos to Eric for doing such a great job teaching at Ramstein.  The next class will be offered November 10th (Fundamentals of Hacking) and I will be down at Ramstein for that one to co-teach with Eric (he doesn’t need it but it makes me feel important).

It’s exciting that HACKINT is getting ready to release two more classes.  Eric has been working hard on the Intermediate Hacking class and he’ll be testing it soon to a select crowd shortly followed by hosting the beta class.  Beta classes are incredibly important for HACKINT and us instructors.  It is an opportunity for students to come in, take the class, and offer feedback that will quickly be used to update the class.  For beta classes it’s asked that students have some familiarity with the material even if it’s just slightly researched before taking the class.  This allows students to ask better questions, state what they were expecting (if expectations weren’t met), and so on.  The second class that’s going to be offered is Intrusion Detection Systems.  I was originally going to make the Fundamentals of Forensics the next class but it’s become apparent that quite a few people have been wanting an IDS class and knowledge on how to setup an IDS for home use, tune it, and figure out what’s going on in their network.  I’ve been working on the class (not as hard as Eric has been on his admittedly) and will have it available to the public in December.  Shortly after that class, I will go ahead and create the Fundamentals of Forensics class followed by a few others (currently looking into Malware Analysis and a few others).

Lastly, HACKINT has been a fun project and grassroots type approach to free education for the military members at Ramstein but it’s apparent to Eric and I that we won’t be stationed near each other for much longer.  As always HACKINT is looking to train up another couple of instructors to take over for us or to take to their next base.  To also help the transition though, I’m currently looking at the possibility of a new website and online class format so that military members and civilians can take the classes and at their own leisure/regardless of location.

There’s a LOT to do and plenty of other real life concerns going on in the world but I’ll update as often as possible as HACKINT keeps pushing forward.

All the best,

Rob

It’s good to see HACKINT get a little publicity from the Ramstein AB paper – Kaiserslautern American.  Capt Tom Hamlyn wrote up the article (thanks!) and submitted it.  As HACKINT goes forward I’m excited to see interest continue to grow.
